Laparoscopic Ventral/Incisional Hernia Repairs

Peter J. Lydon, MD, FACS

Many Ventral/Incisional hernias can be repaired using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques as well as mesh.

These procedures always require general anesthesia and hospital stays range from an outpatient visit (Same Day Surgery) to a short hospital stay of 1 to 3 days depending on the complexity of the case and patient comorbidities. Although the post operative recovery and return to activity are similar to an “Open” repair, the risks of wound complications, including infections, are less with a “Laparoscopic Repair” when compared to an “Open” repair.

This repair also allows the surgeon excellent visualization of the hernia defect which is usually sutured closed prior to the placement of mesh.
